My Approach
“People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be.
When I look at a sunset, I don't find myself saying, 'Soften the orange a bit on the right-hand corner.' I don't try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds.”
- Carl Rogers, A Way of Being
Although I employ many therapeutic lenses in the counseling space, the bedrock of my practice is Person-Centered Therapy, which was founded by Carl Rogers (quoted above). This therapy is rooted in warmth, attunement, empathy, and unconditional positive regard, which I believe to be essential to healing, exploration, and growth.
I also use Emotion-Focused Therapy interventions, created by Leslie Greenberg and Sue Johnson. This therapy aims to help raise awareness of and identify the negative cycles that can keep us trapped and then use corrective experiences to forge a new neural pathway, breaking the cycle.
Other approaches that I gravitate toward are Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Both of these therapies focus on providing tangible tools to gain our footing when we feel stuck in a rut.
This is not a comprehensive list of my approaches, so please feel free to ask if there is a therapy you would like to try.
